Step 1: Strategize

Though every organizing project requires a custom approach, I’ve noticed a pattern among the really successful ones and outlined it in a six-step process I call Organizing for Success: The 6S Model™. This article outlines the first step, Strategize. Follow along with this series of articles and see how well it works!
Did you ever dive into organizing a filing cabinet, desk or storage closet, only to find hours later that you’ve merely sorted your piles into new piles, and you don’t know what to do next?
The first S of The 6S Model is Strategize. Simply put, it means defining your goal and creating a plan to get there. Time spent Strategizing makes every organizing project easier, faster, and more sustainable.
Getting a clear picture of what you want is made easier when you shift your definition of what ‘organized’ means. Being organized is defined by how well a space helps you meet your goals. That means that an organized space isn’t defined by how it looks, or how your neighbors, friends, boss, or family thinks it should look!
Shifting the question from “What do I think this space should look like?” to “What do I want to be able to do here?” is the first step in creating authentic, lasting organization. Answer that question and these as well:
What is and isn’t working? Examples: things pile up because they have no homes, everything doesn’t fit where it belongs, or it’s too hard to put things away. This is a tough one to answer sometimes, and it can be helpful to talk it through with a trusted colleague.
Who has a stake in getting this space organized? Always consult those who use the space to ensure that they are comfortable with what you are doing. They’ll be more likely to maintain the space that way too.
What support and resources will I need to get this job done? You may need to get clearance from your manager or colleagues to schedule some time to do the work. You may need a friend or professional to keep you on track. If you’ll be donating unused items, find out when and where to drop them off. Line up the support now before you get started.
Lastly, Strategizing involves creating a plan. Block off time now on your calendar and get the help you need. The next 5S’s of the 6S Model will cover the rest. It may seem like a lot of work, but Strategizing is critical if you want to organize effectively.
