We like these silver mesh crates to use as desktop storage for our tickler (1-31) files. But unlike the photo, we'd never stack them! Also available in black, and a less expensive version is sometimes available at Staples.
Productive Office Supplies
We strongly believe that working productively is primarily about habits and behaviors, not gadgets. That said, here are a few of the supplies that support the habits and behaviors we teach, as well as a short description on how we use them.

When you are asked to do something in passing by a colleague or client, do you frequently ask them to send you an email so you don't forget? In our experience, nothing creates respect and trust more quickly than the ability to follow through. We recommend these pocket jotters as a simple way to capture ideas and tasks when we're away from our desks. We also like that the bright colors make them easier to find in a purse or briefcase.

While we all wait for the paperless office to arrive, we need to keep paper flowing in and out of our offices productively. Having a defined place to keep paper that's on it's way into our office, out of our office or that needs to be filed keeps things flowing. To do this effectively, we label these three-tier desk shelves (from top to bottom) as "In," "Out," and "To file." We like them better than the common plastic stacking trays, which in our experience tends to keep paper stagnant.

Reduce interruptions and files left on your chair or desk by hanging an in box outside your office door or cubicle. Two tips for making sure it gets used: 1. ask your co-workers to leave things for you there, and 2. empty it frequently.

We wrote about the value of a cueing device when trying to form good habits in our article, An Easy Way to Change a Habit. This small electronic device clips to your belt loop like a pager and can be set to vibrate at the interval of your choosing.
